Choosing Your Own Path

It can be scary to make big decisions without heavenly confirmation, but if we trust ourselves as God does, we’ll find that we can make good choices for our lives.

Our 20s have been rightfully named the Decade of Decision. from From the moment we graduate high school, we’re thrown some of the biggest, most life-changing decisions we’ll ever make: where to go to school, what to study, whom to marry, where to work, where to live, and so on. And we’re taught, as members of the Church, that God will help us with these decisions. But what do we do if we feel like he isn’t answering?

In the article “Making Decisions: Agency vs. Revelation,” Erin Rider discusses how we can move forward during these times of silence. She points to the example of the brother of Jared in the Book of Mormon. In this story, the brother of Jared is given directions to build a boat, but when he asks how to provide light for the boat, the Lord lets the brother of Jared decide. After the brother of Jared decides to use stones, the Lord helps him by making the stones shine.

In life we’re also faced with problems. We may feel that we have received answers in the past but then don’t receive any when making an important decision for our lives. Rider explains that “God wants us to learn how to stand on our own two feet and decide how to live our lives.” If we’re moving forward with faith in God, we can feel at peace knowing that God trusts us to make decisions and will never let us stray too far from the plan he has for each of us.
