Faithfully Acting on Revelation

Faith is what allows us to hear the Lord’s voice and act on his will.

I packed my backpack for the first day of class after changing my major for the third time. I felt excited to begin the semester, convinced I had finally found my calling. However, as the week went on, thoughts that I was in the wrong place began to flood my mind. At first, I was afraid—I was supposed to be graduating in a few semesters, and I had finally felt this path was an appropriate option for me. To ease my fear, I turned to President Henry B. Eyring’s general conference talk “The Faith to Ask and Then to Act.” He teaches that “if [our] faith in Jesus Christ has led to a heart softened…, [we] will be more able to feel the whisperings of the Spirit in answer to [our] prayers.”

Having faith in this promise, I turned to the Lord and said a heartfelt prayer. While I felt his dear love for me, I did not receive a full answer to my question of whether I was in the right place. This taught me that I could not rely on prayer alone; I needed to act, which aligns with President Eyring’s invitation to “ask for direction with the intent to go and do whatever [the Lord] asks.”

This experience prompted me to seek guidance from counselors and research potential career paths. As I earnestly searched for where I belonged, I felt the Lord’s guidance with each small decision. As I prayed and faithfully acted, every choice led me closer to what now feels right. After weeks of searching, I found a career path I feel deeply passionate about.

For me, having the faith to ask and act helped me find a career path I love—a path I didn’t know existed. Choosing to follow promptings and submit to the Lord’s will can sometimes feel daunting, but the Lord knows who we are, and he knows what will make us truly happy. When we have the faith to ask and then act, God will lead us to opportunities we may not have discovered on our own, showing us that trusting his will is worth the leap of faith.
