Four Steps to Following Christ

Christ is our perfect example, but sometimes it’s hard to know how to follow him. Here are four steps that will help us follow in his footsteps.

Christ is the only perfect person who ever lived, and in order to return to our Heavenly Father, we must try to become like him (see 3 Ne. 12:48). Keeping the commandments can seem especially hard in today’s world with so many temptations. As we strive to follow Christ’s example, we will have the strength to overcome those temptations.

However, becoming like Christ is not a one-time event; rather, it is a process. The Mormon Channel’s blog post “Following in His Footsteps” offers four steps we can take to start the process of making Christlike changes.

Step one: Choose a Christlike attribute that you want to emulate. Choosing one attribute to work on will help you focus better on what you need to do to progress.

Step two: Set specific and measurable goals to decide how you want to develop that attribute. Consider what you want your goals to be and keep track of your progress each day.

Step three: Read the scriptures and learn about Christ’s life. Focusing your studies on how Christ portrayed the specific attribute you are working on will teach you more about how to develop that attribute in yourself.

Step four: Pray daily for God’s help. Our Heavenly Father wants to help us. Going to him for help as you strive to become more Christlike will bless you with the strength to progress.

These four steps help us understand concrete things we can do to follow Christ’s footsteps.

  1. We are all working to become like Christ, and often it seems overwhelming. This article was a nice reminder that we don’t have to be exactly like Him right now. It’s simpler than we think.

I love this. I sometimes feel like I want to be better, but I don’t know exactly how to do that. Comments like, “just be better” don’t really help at all. This is super helpful–it just made it click for me that I can take small, simple, meaningful steps to becoming like Christ. Thanks!

  3. I love how this article gives specific ways of how we can become more like Christ– like some of the other commenters have said, it just seems so overwhelming at times and it’s hard to know where to begin!
