How Are Mormons “Saved”?

Many other Christian denominations talk about being saved. Do Mormons believe in being saved? What is the Mormon definition of “saved”?

Some Mormons may be confused when friends ask them, “Have you been saved?” We are Christians. We believe in a Savior. But what does it mean to be saved?

Jesus Christ is our Savior, and “there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). The Gospel Topics section of lds.org explains that we can interpret the words saved and salvation as a symbol of our relationship with Christ: “Through this covenant relationship, followers of Christ are assured salvation from the eternal consequences of sin if they are obedient.”

Still, some people of other faiths may ask if Mormons believe in being saved. The Gospel Topics article explains, “If someone were to ask if another person had been saved, the answer would depend on the sense in which the word is used. The answer might be ‘Yes’ or perhaps it might be ‘Yes, but with conditions”

Jesus Christ saves us in six ways. The first two are the most commonly discussed: salvation from physical death and salvation from sin. Both of these manifestations of salvation come through the Savior’s Atonement, but the first is free to all and the second is conditional. Salvation from sin depends on a person’s willingness to exercise faith in Jesus Christ, repent, be baptized, and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Church members work to strengthen their faith, continually employ the healing process of repentance, and obey the commandments throughout their lives to obtain salvation from sin. In this way, all who have followed this process and acted in faith can be saved through the Atonement (see James 2:17).

  1. This is a great topic we all need to consider and understand in order to explain ourselves better to those of other faiths.
