Jesus Christ: The Way to Lasting Joy

We can find joy even in the midst of trials and disasters when we seek Christ and serve others.

When we see news headlines about devastating hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes, or terrorist attacks, it may seem impossible to find joy in life when so much pain exists in the world. But Sister Jean B. Bingham promises in her talk “That Your Joy Might Be Full” that “joy is found in focusing on our Savior, Jesus Christ, and living the gospel as demonstrated and taught by Him.” We can find this joy by learning of, having faith in, and emulating the Savior.

Learning of Christ

Sister Bingham recalls the challenge issued by President Russell M. Nelson and Elder M. Russell Ballard to learn more about Jesus by studying “The Living Christ.” She testifies that as a result of her diligent study, her “gratitude and love for our Savior have increased.” We too can increase our love and gratitude—and therefore our joy—through devoted study of Christ’s life and teachings.

Having faith in Christ

A greater understanding of Christ’s teachings brings a greater faith in his perfect love. Just as a songbird that made its way into Sister Bingham’s house was afraid to let her guide it back outside, sometimes we are afraid to trust God because we cannot comprehend how much he loves us and wants to help us.

Emulating Christ

A natural effect of increasing our knowledge of and faith in Jesus Christ is having an increased desire to follow his example. Gospel activities such as taking the sacrament, serving others, and reading the scriptures are, in Sister Bingham’s words, “building block[s] for a joyful life.”

With Christ at the center of our lives, we can experience joy, whatever our situation, and share that joy with those around us.
