Lyrics of Light

Whenever life feels dark, we can turn to sacred music to let in the light.

From the time I was a little girl, I have loved singing. I would burst into song at completely random moments, filling my home with lyrics from movies, Church, or my imagination. Singing filled me with joy, and infused my heart with light and hope.

Sister Tracy Y. Browning declared in her address “Tune Your Heart to Jesus Christ: The Sacred Gift of Primary Music” that “sacred music can shine the Light of Christ on the hearer and can pour it into the heart of the singer.” When people listen to or sing songs that point them to the Savior, they can experience peace and hope. The darkness in life can be washed away in his light.

One night a couple of years ago, my mom and I walked across a beach in Florida. As we walked, we listened to the waves and discussed struggles we had recently encountered. Our hearts were heavy, and the darkness of the beach seemed to reflect our concern and fear. Stopping, my mom pulled out her phone, navigated to her music library, and played Laura Story’s “Blessings”—a song about the love Heavenly Father has for us and how to find hope in trials. My heart was filled with light as I listened to that song.

Today, I still love singing and discover just as much joy in it as I did when I was little. However, now as I sing and listen to sacred music, I am also thankful for the light that it brings into my heart. As we turn to sacred music, we can discover peace and hope. Whenever life feels dark, turn to sacred music to let in the light.
