True discipleship begins when we stop pointing fingers and start asking how we can come closer to Christ ourselves.
Gospel messages leave lasting impressions because of the simple yet powerful truths they teach. During the Last Supper, when Jesus Christ told his Apostles that one of them would betray him, each Apostle looked inward and asked, “Lord, is it I?”
This question reflects the humble self-reflection at the heart of discipleship. President Dieter F. Uchtdorf teaches in his message “Lord, Is It I?” that “we must put aside our pride, see beyond our vanity, and in humility ask, ‘Lord, is it I?’” Rather than focusing on the weaknesses of others, disciples of Christ are invited to examine themselves to consider how they may draw closer to Christ.

This message feels especially relevant today. Social media and modern culture encourage judgment and comparison, making it easy to focus on others’ weaknesses while overlooking our own weaknesses. In this way, pride can quietly distance us from the Spirit and others. President Uchtdorf’s message reminds us that the gospel of Jesus Christ is not about measuring our worth against someone else’s: It is about becoming more Christlike through humility and love. Humility brings peace, honest self-examination, and sincere repentance that turns us back toward divinity. We can gradually become more like Jesus Christ and reflect his love more fully.
Remember that self-reflection is not meant to discourage or condemn us. Instead, it creates opportunities for growth and change through Jesus Christ’s Atonement and love. Humbly asking, “Lord, is it I?” increases our capacity for compassion, patience, and understanding. It softens our hearts and allows the Savior’s grace to work more fully in our everyday lives.
True discipleship begins by seeking opportunities to grow in faith, not by judging others. As our hearts turn toward Jesus Christ, he strengthens, refines, and guides us towards true discipleship.
