Humility Deepens Covenant Connections

Christ is the ultimate example of handing his will to God in humility, and we can follow his example in our covenants to draw closer to God.

As a newly endowed member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I found—and sometimes still find—the temple covenants to be overwhelming. Many loving friends have advised me to slow down and look for one aspect of the temple covenants to focus on each session. Elder Jeremy R. Jaggi gave a general conference talk in October 2025 entitled “Humble Souls at Altars Kneel.” In it, anyone searching to make more of their covenants can find a wonderful message: When we actively approach the Lord with humility, we get more out of our covenants.

Elder Jaggi points out that “the sacrament table and temple altars symbolize the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and His infinite Atonement.” Christ exhibited humility by accepting the Father’s will to be done. He offered himself as a sacrifice for our sins without expecting to be glorified; instead, he sought to glorify God. When we make and renew covenants, this is the humility that we should seek to emulate. Elder Jaggi shows how to implement this in a small way: “When I kneel in prayer, I think on how I can give God my will.”

Approaching God in humility with a broken heart and contrite spirit allows us to have the Spirit to always be with us (see Doctrine and Covenants 20:77, 79). Though it might not always be easy to approach God and admit that we have made mistakes or been prideful, our efforts open the door for God to correct our course and bless us with his comforting Spirit.

The next time you’re in the temple, taking the sacrament, or saying a prayer, reflect on your heart. Exhibit the same humility that Christ did, and as you seek to be more Christlike, hand your will over to God. You’ll find that your covenant connection with God is deepened.
