Are you too busy? Is your schedule overloaded? When things aren’t adding up, start subtracting.
Feeling overwhelmed?
You’re not alone. Life is a constant balancing act. Between attending classes, going to work, taking care of loved ones, fulfilling a calling, and much more—life can be overwhelming. In a world filled with more options and distractions than ever before, it’s easy to overload your schedule. In fact, we are so accustomed to being busy that we may even keep up this pace during particularly difficult and trying times in our lives.
President Uchtdorf offers a solution
In an October 2010 general conference talk, “Of Things That Matter Most,” President Dieter F. Uchtdorf urges us to choose simplicity and to focus on the essentials. These essentials include the gospel of Jesus Christ and four key relationships—with God, with our families, with our fellow men, and with ourselves.
We especially need to focus on relationships when going through difficult times. President Uchtdorf says that even though we may not see the benefits right away, “there is a beauty and clarity that comes from simplicity that we sometimes do not appreciate in our thirst for intricate solutions.”
Instead of speeding up or keeping pace when facing obstacles, President Uchtdorf suggests that we “proceed at the optimum speed for our circumstances, focus on the significant, lift up our eyes, and truly see the things that matter most.”
The power of simplicity
President Uchtdorf beautifully illustrates the power of simplicity by giving this compelling example of our Savior, Jesus Christ: “Amidst the multitude of voices and choices, the humble Man of Galilee stands with hands outstretched, waiting. His is a simple message: ‘Come, follow me.’”
As we go on with our busy lives and our never-ending to-do lists, may we always remember to choose simplicity, slow down a little, and follow our Savior.
