3 Steps to Bring You Closer to Christ

Every time we do anything that brings us nearer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, they will support us in taking the next step in our journey back to them.

How can we strengthen our relationship with the Savior? We may have a hard time knowing where to begin. In the talk “Your Next Step,” Elder Randall K. Bennett outlines three actions we can take to bring us closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

First, become as a child. When children are learning to walk, they fall over and over. But they get up and try again, which is what we need to do in order to draw nearer to Christ. With every humble step we take, he and Heavenly Father are waiting to help us as loving parents help a young child.

Second, act with faith. Sometimes taking steps toward Christ may feel difficult or scary. But Elder Bennett teaches, “Whenever we willingly act with faith in Jesus Christ and take another step, especially an uncomfortable step requiring change or repentance, we are blessed with strength.” Christ will empower us and guide us as we do our best to draw nearer to him.

Third, overcome the natural man. Elder Bennett teaches that the natural man has a “tendency to procrastinate, to put off, or to give up.” We must overcome this tendency if we hope to come closer to Christ. When we make mistakes, we can always repent and continue our journey.

Every time we exercise childlike humility, act with faith, or resist the temptation to give up, we take another step in our journey toward Christ. Elder Bennett promises that, as we do so, “each faith-filled step will be met with help from heaven.”
