No matter how dark or difficult life becomes, there is always hope through our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Have you ever felt like life has gone so wrong it could never be set right? Has something ever felt so hard or so painful that you weren’t sure you would survive?
In his general conference address “Sunday Will Come,” Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin describes moments like these from his own life. He expresses the pain and soul-gnawing sorrow that he felt from the loss of loved ones: his father, his mother, his sister, and his wife. He speaks of the loneliness that comes from being left behind and the yearning he feels to be reunited with them again.
The Resurrection of Jesus Christ makes such reunions possible, providing hope that life continues after death. The doctrine of the Resurrection not only provides respite from the sorrow of death, but it also provides hope during any trial through the knowledge that this life of pain is not the end.
Elder Wirthlin explains that hope is possible because of the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christ was lifted up on the cross on a Friday, likely the darkest Friday in the history of the world. But three days later, on Sunday, Christ rose from the dead, demonstrating his power over death and sorrow. Those who had mourned his death just three days before now rejoiced in his glory.
Acknowledging that life is hard and that we experience sorrow, Elder Wirthlin declares: “Each of us will have our own Fridays—those days when the universe itself seems shattered and the shards of our world lie littered about us in pieces. We all will experience those broken times when it seems we can never be put together again.” In the face of inevitable sorrow, Elder Wirthlin testifies that no matter how difficult life is or how broken we feel, there is always hope because of Jesus Christ: “I testify to you in the name of the One who conquered death—Sunday will come. . . . No matter our desperation, no matter our grief, Sunday will come. In this life or the next, Sunday will come.”
