Of Infinite Worth: Discovering Our Divine Potential

As one person in a world of seven billion, it’s easy to feel small and insignificant. It’s a comfort to know that to God, we are everything.

I was one of 26 people in my high school graduating class. In a class that small, you might think that everyone felt valued and important, but there were times when I felt invisible.

In a world of seven billion people, it’s even easier to feel lost in the crowd. However, I’ve learned that, impossible as it seems, our loving Father in Heaven knows each and every single one of us individually and loves us all infinitely.

In the general conference address “You Matter to Him,” President Dieter F. Uchtdorf speaks of a great paradox: “Compared to God, man is nothing; yet we are everything to God. While against the backdrop of infinite creation we may appear to be nothing, we have a spark of eternal fire burning within our breast. We have the incomprehensible promise of exaltation—worlds without end—within our grasp. And it is God’s great desire to help us reach it.” This truth has always been such a comforting principle of the gospel of Jesus Christ—my Heavenly Father knows and loves me, one small drop of water in the sea of faces and people and lives. And within me is infinite potential and possibility that he wants me to discover.

President Uchtdorf continues his loving reminder: “[God] sees you as His child. He sees you as the being you are capable and designed to become. He wants you to know that you matter to Him.” President Uchtdorf testifies that we should not be discouraged in our efforts. God knows us, he loves us, and we are infinitely important to him. Because we are children of God, our futures are so bright! With the knowledge that our Father in Heaven is rooting for us, how can we not strive to be everything that we can be?

Although there will always be times when I feel insignificant, it is an immense comfort to know that I have infinite worth and potential in the eyes of my Heavenly Father. “We are greater than we suppose,” declares President Uchtdorf. Even if you feel like you have only one person cheering you on, isn’t it wonderful to know that it is your omnipotent Father in Heaven?
