Finding Peace in the Liminality

We can find peace in the unknown of spiritual answers through our obedience to and trust in God.

In a world filled with competing voices claiming to possess the truth, filtering through the noise to hear God can feel overwhelming. For many young adults, this struggle is deeply personal, whether it involves complex questions about Church history or private matters of faith. We often find ourselves in a liminal space: that middle ground where we have asked a question but have not yet received an answer.

In her October 2024 general conference talk, “Seeking Answers to Spiritual Questions,” Sister Tracy Y. Browning offers a vital reminder for those navigating these moments of uncertainty. Sister Browning teaches that “wondrously, Heavenly Father’s plan of happiness for all of us is designed to help us progress despite our limitations and accomplish what we cannot accomplish on our own, even without a complete knowledge of all things.” Although we naturally desire immediate clarity, the spiritual struggle inherent in the “unknown” is often where God feels the closest to us. This period of waiting is not wasted time. Rather, it is a process of refinement that strengthens our testimony and deepens our reliance on the Savior.

The promise that we can progress even in uncertainty suggests that we do not need a perfect understanding to experience divine support. We are promised peace and strength if we remain faithful and continue to trust God through the process of seeking. Ultimately, we may find that more peace is discovered within the act of seeking and the daily practice of obedience than in the final attainment of the answer itself. By staying close to the Savior during our moments of uncertainty, we allow our limitations to become the very catalysts for our spiritual progression.
