The Lord’s Joyous Message

The divine message of the gospel is the good news we’ve all been waiting for. Share it with everyone around you—boldly, genuinely, and persistently.

In his April 1972 general conference talk, “A Missionary and His Message,” Elder Hugh B. Brown recounted an experience he had while serving as a young missionary in England. He had felt impressed to visit a certain home over and over again despite having been told not to come again. But Elder Brown could not be deterred.

He recounts that towards the end of his mission, he felt that he could not leave without relaying the important message the Lord had sent him to give to this family. He walked to the front door and “made considerable noise with [the door’s] knocker.” When no one responded, he went around to the back door and this time made considerable noise with his walking stick. Elder Brown memorably describes the woman who answered the door as a setting hen that had been “teased off her nest.” With a nervous lump in his throat, he said, “I am sorry to have interrupted you and have insisted upon an interview, but, my dear sister, I have come over six thousand miles to bring you a message which the Lord wants you to have.”

Thanks to Elder Brown’s genuine persistence, this woman and her daughters were able to find the everlasting peace of the gospel. When this same woman met Elder Brown years later, she told him, “We thank God that you had the courage, the fortitude, and the faith to come to me with that divine message and to leave it with me in the name of the Lord.”

This divine message is the good news that is meant for all. I add my own testimony to Elder Brown’s, for like him, I also feel the truth of Christ’s gospel “from the center of my heart to the ends of my fingers and toes.” I invite each of us as Latter-day Saints to continually and actively search for opportunities to share the gospel with others.
